The band said the album was inspired by a conspiracy theory video about evolution. "I just wrote down, 'Who's the real ape?" said Murphy in a statement. "Humans look down on apes as primitive life forms, but we're just this horrible, lazy society that kills each other and starts wars while they're able to love and feel. Does that make them the true apes or us?"
