After the split of The Housemartins Paul Heaton and David Hemingway formed The Beautiful South. They were joined by Dave Stead (drums), Sean Welch (bass) and David Rotheray (guitar). From 1990 Briana Corrigan joined as another vocalist and was replaced by Jacqueline "Jacqui" Abbott in 1994. In the last phase of the band from 2001-2007 Alison Wheeler took over the female vocal position.Already with their debut album "Welcome to the Beautiful South" the band landed their first hit: "Song for Whoever" climbed to number 2 in the single charts in England. In Germany the single stayed in the charts for 19 weeks and climbed to position 21. The album was no less successful, number 2 in the UK, number 16 in Germany.
