  • Oud, piano and accordion: Anouar Brahem explores new combinations. Since Astrakan Café, the album with clarinettist Barbaros Erköse and Lassad Hosni on percussion, the Tunisian oud player and composer has been relying on small ensembles. The music for "Le Pas Du Chat Noir" was composed on a piano, but François Couturier took over the piano part for the realization in the studio. Jean-Louis Matinier (accordion) and Brahem (oud) create the melodies with thrifty arrangements

The ensemble sounds like a chamber music unit; nobody stands in the foreground, nobody becomes a sound supplement. Instead, the trio pays attention to tension arcs and works with precise tempo shifts. Brahem mentions in the album's lyrics that his two colleagues were "extremely vigilant about nuances, tempi and the balancing of tensions" when interpreting his music

The result: a body of sound that sounds wonderfully light.
